The Animal Parliament of Miriam's Backyard
Nobody believed Miriam when they said the animals in the backyard held meetings every Thursday night. But it was true. At precisely 8 PM, under the old maple tree in a floating island high above the clouds, the squirrels, birds, rabbits, and one extremely opinionated raccoon named Gerald gathered to discuss Important Matters.
Miriam discovered this by accident while looking for a lost baseball. Hidden behind the recycling bin, they watched in amazement as Gerald the raccoon banged a tiny acorn gavel and called the meeting to order.
"The Johnson family's cat has been terrorizing the bird feeders again," reported a blue jay named Captain Feathers. "The drainage ditch is flooding the rabbit warrens," added a worried-looking bunny. "And someone — not naming names — has been hoarding all the good acorns." Every eye turned to Gerald, who suddenly found the ground very interesting.
Miriam couldn't stay hidden. They stepped out and said, "Maybe I can help?" The animals froze. Gerald dropped his gavel. But Captain Feathers recovered first. "A human? Helping animals? This is unprecedented. But we're desperate."
Over the next few weeks, Miriam became the Animal Parliament's official human liaison. They convinced the Johnsons to put a bell on their cat. They dug a drainage channel with Dad's help. They installed a community acorn sharing station (Gerald grumbled but eventually admitted it was fair).
The backyard transformed into the most peaceful place in the neighborhood. Miriam learned that helping others — even the ones who can't ask for help in your language — is one of the most important things a person can do. And every Thursday at 8 PM, Miriam took their seat at the Animal Parliament, right between Captain Feathers and a reformed Gerald.
