Maya was stuck on Level 99 of "Quest for the Golden Code" — the hardest video game ever made. Every speedrunner, every pro gamer, every kid on the internet had tried and failed. The final boss, a massive shadow dragon called The Glitch, couldn't be beaten with swords, spells, or cheat codes.

For weeks, Maya tried everything. Stronger weapons. Better armor. Perfect timing. Nothing worked. The Glitch would just absorb every attack and grow stronger. Maya was ready to give up when they noticed something nobody else had seen — a tiny NPC (non-player character) hiding in the corner of the screen, flickering like a broken pixel.

Maya walked their character over to the NPC. A text box appeared: "Nobody ever talks to me. Everyone's too busy fighting." Maya selected "Talk" instead of "Attack." The NPC said: "The Glitch isn't a monster. It's a mirror. It becomes whatever you throw at it. If you attack with anger, it becomes anger. If you approach with faith, it becomes faith."

Maya put away the sword. They walked straight toward The Glitch with no weapon, no shield, no armor. The dragon reared up, flames building in its throat — and then stopped. It looked confused. No one had ever approached without fighting before.

Maya selected "Offer Help." The Glitch shuddered, shrunk, and transformed into a small, luminous creature that said, "Thank you. I was waiting for someone to choose a different way." The screen flashed: "CONGRATULATIONS — YOU BEAT THE GAME." And Maya became the first person in the world to clear Level 99, not by fighting harder, but by choosing faith.

Talk about it

Maya won by talking to someone forgotten and choosing kindness over fighting.

Three questions for lights-out

  1. What did Maya notice that other players had missed?
  2. Why do you think The Glitch stopped attacking when Maya didn't fight back?
  3. Has choosing a different way ever worked better for you than trying hard?

Words worth knowing

speedrunner
A player who tries to beat a game as fast as possible.
NPC
A character in a game controlled by the computer, not by you.
flickering
Turning on and off really quickly, like a blinking light.
absorb
To take something in without being hurt or changed by it.
luminous
Shining brightly with its own light.

Why did Maya try to talk instead of fight?

Maya noticed a hidden character no one else had seen, and listening to what it said gave them a clue that fighting wouldn't work.

Is this story saying violence is bad?

Not exactly—it's about noticing when something isn't working and being brave enough to try something different, even when everyone else is doing it one way.
