Liam and the Song That Changed Everything
Liam loved music more than anything, but they were convinced they had the worst singing voice in the history of singing voices. Every time the school choir rehearsed, Liam mouthed the words silently, terrified of being heard.
Then Mr. Okafor, the new music teacher, arrived. He had a deep, booming laugh and played six different instruments. On his first day, he said something that stuck with Liam: "Music isn't about being perfect. It's about being honest. The best songs come from faith."
Mr. Okafor gave Liam a small ukulele and said, "Learn one chord. Just one. And play it like you mean it." Liam practiced that one chord — C major — until their fingertips were sore. Then Mr. Okafor taught them a second chord. Then a third. And then, one rainy afternoon, Liam strummed all three together and sang — really sang — for the first time.
The song wasn't perfect. Liam's voice cracked on the high notes and wobbled on the low ones. But it was honest. It was real. And when Liam looked up, Mr. Okafor was smiling. "There it is," he said. "That's the sound of someone who means every note."
At the spring concert, Liam stood alone on stage with the tiny ukulele and sang a song they had written themselves — a song about faith, about being afraid and singing anyway.
