Finding Biscuit: A Story About Speaking truth
Biscuit the hamster was missing. Liam had left the cage door open — just for a second, just to refill the water — and Biscuit had made a break for it with the determination of a tiny furry escape artist.
Liam searched everywhere. Under the bed. Behind the bookshelf. In the laundry basket. Inside every shoe in the closet. No Biscuit. Panic set in. "What if he's outside? What if a cat got him? What if he's gone forever?"
Mom sat Liam down. "Let's think about this calmly. What does speaking truth tell us to do right now?" Liam sniffled. "To not give up?" "And to ask for help," Mom added.
Liam made Lost Hamster posters with a drawing of Biscuit (round, golden, one slightly wonky ear) and posted them around the neighborhood. They knocked on every door. Mrs. Chen offered to check her garden. The Patel kids helped search the garage. Old Mr. Kim, who rarely left his house, shuffled out with a flashlight to check under the porch.
Three days later, Mrs. Chen called. She'd found Biscuit napping contentedly in her yarn basket, surrounded by half-chewed balls of merino wool. He looked fatter and very pleased with himself.
The neighborhood celebrated Biscuit's return with a block party (any excuse for a block party, really). But Liam learned something bigger than how to keep a hamster cage closed. They learned that speaking truth shows up in the people who search with you, who make posters, who check under porches at night. "It takes a village to find a hamster," Mom said. And everyone laughed, because it was silly and true at the same time.
