Priya and the Last Tree in the Rain Forest
The virtual reality headset was a birthday gift, but Priya wasn't expecting it to be real. The label said "Eco-Quest: Save the Rain Forest" — a game where you planted trees and fought pollution. Standard stuff. But when Priya put on the headset, the living room vanished, and they were standing in an actual rain forest, mud on their sneakers, howler monkeys screaming overhead.
"This isn't a game," said a parrot, landing on Priya's shoulder. "I'm Verde. This rain forest is real, and it's dying. We have one day to save the last ancient tree, or the whole ecosystem collapses." Verde's feathers ruffled urgently. "No pressure."
The journey to the ancient tree was brutal. They crossed a river on a log bridge, dodged a grumpy jaguar (Verde negotiated safe passage in exchange for directions to a mango tree), and navigated a maze of roots that tried to trip them at every step.
When they finally reached the ancient tree, Priya gasped. It was enormous — trunk wider than a house, branches touching the clouds, roots stretching out like arms holding the earth together. But dark patches crept up its bark, and its leaves were falling like tears.
"What's killing it?" Priya asked. Verde landed on a dying branch. "Neglect. People stopped caring. And when people stop caring, even the strongest things wither." Priya felt the weight of that truth. They placed their hands on the bark and said, "I care. I promise to care."
The tree shuddered. Color flooded back into its bark. Leaves burst from every branch, and the entire forest seemed to exhale with relief. Verde chirped happily. "One person caring doesn't sound like much. But it's how every great change begins."
Priya removed the headset, back in the living room. But the mud on their sneakers was real. And the promise? That was real too. Tzedakah starts with one person saying, "I care." And meaning it.
