The Library That Came to Life for Nico
Nico was hiding in the library again. Not from anything bad — just from the noise. The library was the quietest place in the world, and Nico loved quiet the way other kids loved recess. Mrs. Pham, the librarian, always saved the comfiest chair by the window.
One Thursday, Nico opened a very old book with no title on the cover. The first sentence read: "If you are reading this, you have been chosen." Before Nico could turn the page, the letters began to move — swirling off the paper like golden butterflies, circling Nico's head, and pulling them into the book itself.
Nico landed in a world made entirely of stories. Mountains were built from stacked novels. Rivers were flowing ink. The sky was parchment, and the clouds were written in cursive. A girl made of words walked up and said, "Welcome to the Narratory. We need your help. The villain — the Eraser — is deleting stories, and we're running out of tales to tell."
The Eraser was a massive gray smudge that consumed every story it touched, leaving blank pages behind. Nico watched in horror as it devoured a fairy tale, a mystery, and half a cookbook. "How do we stop it?"
"By remembering," the word-girl said. "The Eraser can only destroy stories that have been forgotten. Every story you remember, every value you hold, gives us power." Nico closed their eyes and began to remember — bedtime stories, family legends, the tale Grandpa told about the suitcase.
Each memory became a beam of light that pushed the Eraser back. And when Nico said, "I believe in love thy neighbor," the light became blinding. The Eraser dissolved, and the Narratory was saved. Nico returned to the library chair, the book back to normal, Mrs. Pham none the wiser. But every time Nico opened a book after that, the letters seemed to glow a little brighter.
