Mateo and the Last Tree in the Rain Forest
The virtual reality headset was a birthday gift, but Mateo wasn't expecting it to be real. The label said "Eco-Quest: Save the Rain Forest" — a game where you planted trees and fought pollution. Standard stuff. But when Mateo put on the headset, the living room vanished, and they were standing in an actual rain forest, mud on their sneakers, howler monkeys screaming overhead.
"This isn't a game," said a parrot, landing on Mateo's shoulder. "I'm Verde. This rain forest is real, and it's dying. We have one day to save the last ancient tree, or the whole ecosystem collapses." Verde's feathers ruffled urgently. "No pressure."

"What's killing it?" Mateo asked. Verde landed on a dying branch. "Neglect. People stopped caring. And when people stop caring, even the strongest things wither." Mateo felt the weight of that truth. They placed their hands on the bark and said, "I care. I promise to care."
The tree shuddered. Color flooded back into its bark. Leaves burst from every branch, and the entire forest seemed to exhale with relief. Verde chirped happily. "One person caring doesn't sound like much. But it's how every great change begins."
Mateo removed the headset, back in the living room. But the mud on their sneakers was real. And the promise? That was real too. Perseverance starts with one person saying, "I care." And meaning it.
