When Elena Became Class President (By Accident)
Elena never planned to run for class president. It happened because of a typo. Someone wrote "Elena" on the ballot instead of "Charlie" (the names were similar if you squinted), and before Elena could correct the mistake, three kids had already voted for them.
"I can't be class president!" Elena told Ms. Park. "I don't even know what a class president does!" Ms. Park smiled. "Neither does anyone else until they try. But the votes are in, and people chose you. The question is — what will you do with the responsibility?"
Elena's first act was admitting they had no idea what they were doing. "I need help," they told the class honestly. "What do you actually want to change?" Hands shot up. Better recess equipment. A class pet. No homework on Fridays (this was vetoed by Ms. Park, unfortunately). Permission to play music during art class.
Elena didn't try to do everything alone. They created committees — the Recess Committee, the Class Pet Committee, the Fun Stuff Committee. Everyone had a role. Everyone had a voice. And slowly, things started changing. New jump ropes appeared. A hamster named Professor Whiskers joined the class. Art period now had a carefully curated playlist.
But the biggest change was something nobody expected. The class started treating each other differently. Arguments were resolved with discussions instead of shouting. New kids were welcomed by a buddy system. The quiet kids were asked their opinions.
At the end of the year, Ms. Park asked Elena what they'd learned about leadership. Elena thought for a moment. "Leadership isn't about being in charge. It's about making sure everyone else feels like they matter." Ms. Park nodded. "You were never an accidental president, Elena. You were exactly the right one."
