Nobody Wanted This Dog (Except Kai)
The shelter dog was not cute. Let's be honest about that upfront. She was missing half an ear, had a bald patch on her hip, and one eye was permanently squinty. The card on her kennel said "Luna — 7 years old — returned twice." While every other family cooed over puppies, Luna sat in the back of her kennel, not even bothering to look hopeful anymore.
Kai knelt down in front of Luna's kennel. Luna didn't come over. She'd learned not to. "Hi, Luna," Kai said quietly. "I know how you feel. Nobody picked me for the kickball team for a whole year." Luna's squinty eye opened a fraction wider.
"We can't adopt HER," said Kai's sibling. "She looks like she lost a fight with a lawnmower." Mom looked uncertain. Dad looked at Kai. Kai looked at Luna. "She's the one," Kai said with absolute certainty.
The first week was rough. Luna hid under the bed. She flinched when anyone moved too fast. She wouldn't eat if someone was watching. Kai lay on the floor next to the bed every evening, just breathing, just being present. "You're safe now," Kai whispered into the darkness under the bed. "Nobody's taking you back."
On day nine, Luna crawled out from under the bed and put her head in Kai's lap. It was the gentlest, most trusting gesture Kai had ever experienced. From that moment, they were inseparable. Luna slept at Kai's feet, walked beside them to school, and greeted them at the door with the most enthusiastic tail wag in canine history.
The vet said Luna's personality transformation was remarkable. "Some dogs just need the right person," she said. Kai scratched Luna behind her half-ear and smiled. "Some people just need the right dog."
