Luna found a dragon in the forest clearing, sitting alone by the fireflies. His name was Spark, and he looked very sad.

"What's wrong?" Luna asked.

"I want to cook something amazing," Spark said quietly, "but I'm afraid I'll mess it up. Dragons are supposed to be brave, but I'm not brave at cooking."

Luna sat down beside him. "I'm not very good at cooking either," she said honestly. "But I try anyway."

"Really?" Spark's eyes got a tiny bit brighter.

"Really. And you know what? You're already brave. You told me the truth about being scared."

Spark thought about this. "Will you help me?"

"Yes!" Luna said. "Let's make star-shaped pancakes. We can pretend they're from space!"

They gathered berries and flour. Spark was so nervous his tail knocked over the honey—SPLOOOSH!—and it went everywhere. Luna giggled. "Look, the pancakes are already sweet!"

Spark laughed too. Then he tried flipping a pancake. It flew too high, spun in the air, and landed perfectly on the plate. "I did it!" he shouted.

"You did," Luna said, smiling. "I knew you could."

They made a whole pile of star pancakes, golden and warm. Other forest animals came to the clearing, drawn by the smell. Everyone wanted to try one.

"Thank you," Spark whispered to Luna as they sat together, watching the fireflies dance. "For believing in me."

"Thank you," Luna said back, "for being honest about how you felt."

Spark's belly was full and his heart felt warm. The stars came out above the trees, and he rested his head near Luna's shoulder. The fireflies glowed soft and slow. Everything was quiet and good.

Talk about it

Luna helped Spark discover he was brave enough to try cooking, even when scared.

Three questions for lights-out
