Milo's Big Build in the Firefly Forest
Milo was a young rabbit with soft brown fur and ears that stood straight up like exclamation marks. He loved to build things—towers, bridges, little homes—but tonight he felt worried in his belly. Tomorrow was the Great Forest Block Battle Royale, the biggest building-and-hiding contest of the year, and everyone said it was for the *really* good builders.
"I'm probably not good enough," Milo whispered to himself as the sun sank low.
His best friend Olive, a clever squirrel with a crooked tail, found him sitting alone. "Why aren't you at the forest clearing? Everyone's gathering to plan teams."
"I don't think I should go," Milo said quietly. "I'll just mess up."
Olive's nose twitched. She could see Milo was sad, and sadness was lonely. She sat right next to him. "Come anyway. I want you there."
When they reached the firefly forest clearing, Milo saw hedgehogs, foxes, and chipmunks everywhere, already stacking blocks and laughing. In the corner sat Jasper, a young porcupine, absolutely still. Nobody was talking to him.
Milo remembered how Jasper's spines made other animals nervous at first. He walked over. "Want to be on a team?"
Jasper's eyes went wide. "Really?"
"Really," said Milo. "You're good at spotting hiding places."
When the battle began at dusk, fireflies blinked to life all around them like tiny floating lanterns. Milo's team built a tower—and it wobbled. His heart raced. But Jasper suggested adding blocks at an angle, and Olive brought sturdy branches. The tower *held*. Better still, it stood tall enough to hide behind perfectly.
Milo discovered something surprising: he *could* build something tricky. He'd just never tried when someone believed in him. When Jasper suggested ideas, Milo listened instead of doubting himself. When Olive got stuck reaching the top, Milo helped lift her up.
They didn't win—a team of badgers found the cleverest hideout—but Milo didn't mind. As the contest ended, Jasper said, "You made me feel brave today," and Milo felt warm all through.
The three friends walked home as the fireflies dimmed. The forest grew quiet. Milo's paws felt soft on the mossy ground. In the distance, an owl called its gentle goodnight. When Milo reached his burrow and curled into his bed of clover and down, his heart was calm and full. He thought of Jasper's smile, Olive's laugh, and how he'd tried—really tried—and discovered he was braver than he knew.
The moon rose over the clearing. Milo's eyes grew heavy. Sleep came gentle and kind.
