Illustration for Princess Penny and the Harp That Only Worked Backward

Princess Penny owned a magical harp that was absolutely, completely terrible. When she played it in her palace tower trying to sound elegant, it sounded like a moose arguing with a trumpet while drowning. Toads fled. Servants wore earmuffs. Even the royal cat filed a formal complaint.

But Penny didn't care. She was a princess! People had to listen, even if they cried tears of pain.

Everything changed the day Penny sneezed so magnificently that she tumbled out of her carriage into the Royal Forest and crashed directly into an old hedgehog named Rupert, who was sitting among sick forest animals.

"They won't recover," Rupert sniffled sadly. "Nobody visits. Nobody helps. Nobody cares."

Penny scrunched her nose. But she had her harp. "Fine. I'll play for them."

She pulled it out, prepared for everyone to suffer, and began playing. But something impossible happened the moment she played *for Rupert and the forest animals* instead of for herself:

The harp played beautifully. Perfectly. Magically.

A sick rabbit opened one eye. A worried owl perked up. A grumpy badger—who hadn't smiled in three seasons—actually grinned. A fox laughed so hard he snorted and couldn't stop.

"My harp is... good?" Penny whispered.

"Magic knows," Rupert explained gently, "when you're being selfish. Your instrument only works when you're helping others."

At first, this seemed unfair. But then something strange happened: Penny noticed helping felt better than being admired. She came back the next day. And the next. She played for lonely animals. She played for creatures who'd lost their homes. She made music for anyone who needed it.

The kingdom's finest concert hall offered Penny a golden stage—a chance to be famous forever, playing for thousands!

Penny went back to the forest instead, harp in hand.

That's where the real magic was.
